Hey. I’m going to show some version of my final project tomorrow evening. It’ll be running in Scott Gym prior to the First Year MFA Dance Event. The concert starts at 7:30 and is FREE. The whole show ran about 50 minutes this evening, so it’s not too long – and there’s some exquisite dancing as well. ALSO, there will be food and twister in Mendenhall Ctr’s Green Room immediately following the show. Hope you can make it. – m

This course seeks to formulate critical questions that are essential to an understanding of American life in the Digital Age. Our inquiries will range from broad sociological problems concerning political culture, globalization, and the organization of capitalist economies to personal questions concerning intimacy, cognitive styles, and self-awareness. Most of the content driving the course will focus on the digital world itself: electronic commerce, the blogosphere, virtual community, video gaming, new media, hypermedia, digital devices. However, our abiding objective will be to understand the digital phenomenon as a dimension of American life in general.

Save for the brief Y2K scare, we rarely think critically about technology, how it shapes and informs our lives. Furthermore, as students of the social world, sociologists are a little behind the times in thinking about how technology affects data collection, analysis, and re-presentation. For this course we will first develop a critical perspective on media and technology, but will then take a unique next step: throughout the semester there will be workshops on Podcasting, Powerpoint, Wikis, Video, and Photography to put those lessons into practice. SOC 101 is required. Three short papers and a final project are assigned. Enrollment limited to 30.

Bonos in Concert

Hey everybody
I will be performing live in concert for the occasion of our final project on December 11th at Hampshire College in the Music Building Recital Hall. It will start at 8:30pm and last about 45 minutes. There will be food. Audio and video recordings will provide the documentation that will be used for my final critique, but there’s nothing like the real thing.

So, I have to run to connecticut tonight after my seminar gets out…not sure if i will have time before class tomorrow to post about the second part of this reading.

But, what struck me the most about the section titles Databases, data visualization, and mapping, was that 2 pages into it, on page 178 during the part that reads “from the digitization of libraries, historical records, and museum collections to data collection for commercial purposes, and the internet as a gigantic data storage and retrieval system, archives, and databases have become an essential form of cultural organization and memory.” This quote was so hard to deal with. I wanted to cry or something. It stressed me out, this huge weight of all of this just sitting there. Paul brings this up later on page 185 and mentions the paralyzing affects of all of this. I really want to find some examples that really explicitly deal with this concept because I Think it is one that is really hard to think about solely because its rather depressing. But, at the same time, its something that needs to be addressed since it is becoming the norm for our existence.

“Tracing today’s technological developments back through the relatively recent ‘heyday’ periods of consumer devices such as the walkman and VCR, TV remote control, cable and satellite television, polaroid cameras, etc. can help provide a perspective from which to resist the seductions of the ‘new media’ marketplace.” I thought this was really important because so much of the new technology is thought of as so fun and sexy and no one really stops to think about the inherent consumerist and money driven reasons. I mean, Steve Jobs might be iGod, but, come on now.

“Today, artistic practice which questions, considers, problematizes and reflects upon the impact of technology… is as necessary as ever before.” for real. I think this is really important because so much of technology is taken for granted and if people can be made to consider different perspectives I can only see that being a good thing.

“In an interview, Lepage addresses this issue by stating that today’s audience consists of “gymnastic” thinkers – able to process and make sense of complex imagery, non-linear and overlapping narratives, multiple characters played by one actor, etc. Lepage talks about “using people’s evolving intelligence” when telling stories in the theater. He says “people are extremely up-to-date, even if they are not educated or well cultured. They have a very modern way of connecting things”. (…) if you don’t use that … of course they’re bored”. (3)” I really want to question this. Is it that they have a more evolved way of thinking or is it that they are used to shallow medias that do not require them to deeply engage in material? Is he really putting faith in people and believing that when someone is sitting and watching 24 on the tube that they are being conscious of the impact that biological weapons may have on us one day, what the ethics are, where they stand morally…etc.? I, think this is giving people a tab bit too much credit maybe? I’m not sure. It’s something I worry over.

When discussing the need to meet face-to-face for the ‘new economy’ to work at its best and the support going towards saving the physical world…I’m glad he’s so positive about it, but, at the same time…I’m not sure if he has given any evidence as to why we should believe that.

“Educators need to be educated.” Amen.
